You always hear that every kid learns differently, and as educators or therapists, we know that. But when it’s your own child? It feels totally different. I didn’t really get it until I was teaching my children how to read.

A Tale of Two Reading Journeys
My daughter caught on fairly quickly. We started around age 5 or 6, and by 7, she was off and running. She still loves to read and is now a couple of grade levels ahead.
Then came my son… and wow, totally different story.
I tried the same approach I used with my daughter — phonics, simple readers, hands-on practice — but he just wasn’t into it. Every reading session turned into a battle. He was frustrated. I was frustrated. And it was clear something needed to be added or changed to our reading routine.
I began scouring the internet for ideas. That is when I came across Reading Eggs.
We hadn’t used any apps with my daughter — just old-school phonics and reading practice together. But I figured I had nothing to lose, so I signed up for their 30-day free trial.
Engaged from the Start: Why Reading Eggs Worked
He was immediately into it! The lessons felt like games, and he loved collecting rewards and leveling up. The competitive element really worked for him — suddenly, he wanted to learn.
He enjoyed the stories in the app, and after he’d gone through a few lessons, I decided to bring out the phonics and traditional books again. It still wasn’t his favorite activity, but I could see a shift — he felt more confident and was actually willing to try. Before long, he even found a few favorite books that he loved reading with me over and over.
One feature that stood out to me was the 20-question placement test. Instead of starting from scratch, the app figures out exactly where your child should begin based on both their age and their current skill level. It gave my son a confidence boost right away because he wasn’t stuck redoing things he already knew.
Supporting Both My Kids at Different Levels
Even now that both of my kids are in traditional school for 3rd and 6th grade, I still want to support their reading development at home, and Reading Eggs makes that easy to do.
It’s super easy to set up separate profiles, so each child gets a personalized experience. Both of mine are currently in Reading Eggspress, which is designed for ages 7–13.
Reading Eggs has something for every stage:
- Reading Eggs Junior (ages 2–4)
- Reading Eggs (ages 3–7)
- Fast Phonics (ages 5–10)
- Reading Eggspress (ages 7–13)
A Bonus Boost: Mathseeds
There’s even a bonus section called Mathseeds if you want to sneak in some math learning, too.
We used Mathseeds in conjunction with our math curriculum, and it was a great way to reinforce grade-level-appropriate math concepts with both of my kids.
Mathseeds has been designed as a full math curriculum for ages 3-9. You'll get a bonus 30-day free trial of it along with your 30-day free trial of Reading Eggs. After the trial period ends, you can choose to have it be a part of your subscription plan.
Parent-Friendly Features
Once your kids have completed a few of the lessons, you can check out the parent dashboard area to keep track of their progress. It will give you a progress report of the last 90 days, along with how many lessons, skills, or quizzes your child has completed.
Not only do you have access to the award-winning app, but you can also download free activity worksheets matched to each online lesson. This takes the reading practice off the screen and gives access to more practice in different ways.
Plus, there is a lot of support for parents within the app, including user guides, lesson overviews, webinars, summer school resources, and program guides for homeschoolers.
The Reading Eggs app is available in the App Store or Google Play Store. Parents can also access the family dashboard through any computer with internet access.
So if reading time has become a struggle in your house, or if you're looking for a fun way to support your child’s reading journey, I highly recommend giving Reading Eggs a try. It made a huge difference for us.
